Benefits of Outdoor Exercise

Your Plano family doctors highly recommend regular exercise and physical activity for overall health and disease prevention. With Memorial Day weekend coming up, plenty of opportunities for outdoor physical activity exist.

Studies show that health benefits from exercising outdoors are often more than those from indoor exercise. Spending time in nature can help alleviate stress, and sun exposure can help boost mood – just don’t forget to wear sunscreen! Wind provides natural resistance, requiring more physical effort for exercise like running and cycling.

Whether outdoor or indoor, regular exercise is an important part of maintaining a healthy lifestyle and can improve your quality of life by:

  • Maintaining a stable weight by preventing weight gain and stimulating weight loss.
  • Lowering risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, diabetes, specific types of cancer and more.
  • Boosting energy by delivering more oxygen to muscles and building endurance.
  • Improving mood, lowering stress and helping prevent depression.

There are lots of ways you and your family can enjoy physical activity together to further your entire family’s health! Try:

  • Going on a family walk or bike ride in your neighborhood.
  • Taking a hike through a local park.
  • Gathering the family for a game of volleyball, tennis, Frisbee and more.
  • Gardening.
  • Spending an afternoon in the pool.

Have a happy and healthy holiday!

10 Superfoods for Stress Relief

Stress Awareness Month during April is the perfect time to reassess eating habits and make positive changes for a healthier lifestyle. When we’re stressed, it is easy to turn to high-calorie items with low nutritional value like junk food, chocolate, caffeine and alcohol. While these items may make us feel slightly better in the short term, their effects fade quickly leaving us craving more and lacking nourishment in our bodies.

Better Homes & Gardens shares some tips for which healthy foods are natural stress relievers. Some of the foods listed include:

  • asparagus
  • beef
  • milk
  • cottage cheese
  • vitamin C rich foods
  • almonds
  • blueberries
  • tuna
  • low-sugar, fortified cereal

For each items full benefits and recommended serving sizes, read the full article at Better Homes & Gardens 10 Superfoods for Stress Relief.

Reduce & Manage Stress With Yoga

During Stress Awareness Month this April, your Plano doctors are looking at healthy ways to decrease and manage stress.

Yoga is one great method to reduce stress, maintain health and encourage a peaceful mind. Yoga connects both physical and mental disciplines to accomplish peacefulness of body and mind, which helps you relax and manage stress. Various yoga postures are effective for stimulating relaxation, tension relief and restfulness. For instance, seated postures like “child’s pose” can encourage calm feelings and assist the mind into a meditative state. Empowering postures such as “standing forward bend” and “eagle” can relax the mind, while simultaneously energizing the body.

Yoga has several styles, forms and intensities available, so finding the best type to fit your fitness level and unique health concerns is certainly possible.

Types of Yoga:

  • Hatha - Hatha yoga’s basic, easily accessible poses are perfect for beginners. This practice instills a calm and meditative mood.
  • Ananda - Ananda yoga focuses on gentle poses that concentrate on proper body alignment and controlled breathing.
  • Astanga – Astanga yoga is physically demanding and consists of synchronizing breathing with a continuous flow of poses.
  • Bikram - Bikram is a high-fitness type known for hot yoga practice that promotes more flexibility & detoxification.
  • Power – Power yoga is a discipline practice that combines stretching and meditative breathing in a continuous flow of postures. Push-ups, handstands and side bends can be basic postures for this practice.

Yoga’s Core Components:

  • Postures are a series of movements designed to increase strength and flexibility.
  • Breathing indicates your body’s vital energy. Practicing yoga can help teach control over breathing to control the body and quiet the mind.

Potential Health Benefits of Yoga:

  • Stress reduction – Practicing yoga can help reduce stress and anxiety by teaching control over the mind and enhancing mood and sense of well-being.
  • Improved fitness – Yoga poses can improve balance, flexibility, range of motion and strength.
  • Management of chronic conditions - Practicing yoga can help reduce risk factors for heart disease, high blood pressure, depression, anxiety and insomnia.

Weight Loss Results With VHP’s 8-Week Program

The results are in! If you’re looking for motivation and accountability to lose weight, Village Health Partners’ Plano weight loss program with dietitian Melanie Wilder is proven to jump-start your weight loss journey to a healthier, lighter you. Our next 8-week weight loss courses ($199 per person) begin tomorrow, Wednesdays starting April 3, or Saturdays starting April 6. Call (972) 599-9600 to register!

January’s 59 weight loss program participants lost a total of 533.4 pounds in just 8 weeks. This is equal to an average of 4% body weight per participant! The “biggest loser” lost 26 pounds during the 8-week program, which is an incredible 10.1% total weight loss in just 8 weeks! Plus, 49 participants lost an average of 2.6 inches from their waistline!

Village Health Partners‘ 8-week group weight management course is taught by our licensed dietitian,  Melanie Wilder. Each week, Melanie focuses on important weight loss and nutrition factors like balanced nutrition, physical activity, portion control, weight goal setting and stress management. She can also counsel patients individually during one-on-one sessions to determine your weight-related health issues and provide the appropriate healthy lifestyle changes. By participating in the weight loss program you will learn how to add nutritional foods to your meals and instill healthy eating habits among your family, all while getting closer to your target weight in a safe environment with medical supervision. Weight loss helps prevent health problems such as high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke and diabetes.

Here’s what our Plano weight loss program participants are saying:

“The 8-week course was more than helpful. Melanie is knowledgeable and full of examples to implement in daily life. I really hated to see the class end! Mindful eating, journaling, and not letting a lapse become a collapse have been great tools for me. Excellent course! The session about cognitive behavior was an eye opening bonus.”

“I think this plan works good for me because it’s NOT a diet. It’s being aware of what I’m putting into my body and making better decisions. I tend to rebel against restriction. This makes it my choice – period. Thank you!”

“Love this course. The information was so helpful and really effective. It helped me to positively changed my outlook and methods. Melanie was so encouraging, positive and motivating!”

“Melanie is easily the best resource VHP has. She has done more to help me improve my nutrition, health and lifestyle than all of the healthcare providers I have worked with combined. Thank you for having her here for patients.”

April is National Stress Awareness Month

April is Stress Awareness Month — the perfect time to share stress minimizing tips. Stress is a normal part of everyday life, so finding a healthy way to handle it before it takes a toll on your body is important. Stress can come from your environment, body, and even your own thoughts. Stress can have negative health effects when faced with continuous challenges without any relaxation between. When tension builds, our health can take a turn for the worst, so it is important to take precautions when under stress or other pressure. Alcohol and tobacco usage also keep the body in a stressed state, which can cause additional issues.

Stress can lead to the following serious health issues:

  • Heart disease- Sudden emotional stress can be a trigger for serious cardiac issues such as heart attacks.
  • Asthma- Studies have shown that stress can worsen asthma.
  • Obesity- Excess fat in the stomach poses a greater health risk than fat anywhere else on the body.
  • Diabetes- Stress can worsen diabetes by encouraging unhealthy eating or excessive drinking and raising glucose levels.
  • Headaches- Stress is considered one of the most common triggers for headaches and migraines.
  • Depression and anxiety- Chronic stress is related to higher rates of      depression and anxiety.
  • Gastrointestinal problems- Stress can be a common factor.
  • Alzheimer’s disease- Researchers speculate that reducing stress has the potential to slow down the onset of Alzheimer’s.
  • Accelerated aging- Stress can accelerate aging about 9 to 17 additional years.
  • Premature death- This can affect people who are naturally under a great deal of stress, such as caregivers.

Try the following tips to de-stress:

  • Stay positive! Give yourself positive messages.
  • Take time out to enjoy activities that give you pleasure like reading, watching a movie or gardening.
  • Try yoga to help calm your nerves.
  • Exercise daily. In addition to supplying endorphins, your body can fight stress better when you’re in shape!
  • Avoid alcohol and tobacco.
  • Eat healthy, well-balanced meals.
  • Get enough sleep to help your body recover and repair itself.
  • Take deep breaths to help you instantly relax.
  • Count to 10 & think before reacting to a stressful situation.

Spring Forward With Nutritional Snacking!

Spring forward with a nutritional fresh start! March’s warmer weather in the Plano area means baseball, soccer games and other outdoor activities. All these spring activities can make it harder to stay on track and fit healthy eating patterns into your family’s busy schedule. Instead of grabbing fast food when you’re on the go, take time to prepare healthy snacks that give your family the energy they need to stay on the right nutritional path going into summer.

The best snacks for healthy, long-lasting energy are a 150 calorie combination of protein and carbohydrates. Protein helps you feel full and stay feeling full longer. Carbohydrates provide an instant burst of energy to help keep you on the move. Below, I’ve shared some of my favorite snacks that combine protein and carbs – all under 150 calories!

On-the-go nutritional snacks, 150 calories or less:

  • 10 Almonds plus small fruit – 147 calories
  • Fruit cups in natural juices plus one oz. of low fat cheese – 70 calories and 7 grams of protein
  • Rice cakes with 1 tbsp of peanut butter
  • Unsalted soy nuts (1/4 cup) – 120 calories and 12 grams of protein
  • 4 tbsp of Hummus – 90 calories
  • Fruit smoothies using plain yogurt, frozen fruit, unsweetened vanilla almond milk or 1% milk
  • 100 calorie low fat popcorn plus one low fat cheese stick for protein
  • Apples/bananas with peanut butter (small apple or 1/2 banana + 1tbsp peanut butter) – under 100 calories and 3.5 grams of protein
  • Bowl of oatmeal made with 1/2 cup 1% milk + 1/4 cup berries

For more nutritional eating assistance, make an appointment to see Village Health Partners’ Dietitian Melanie Wilder, R.D., L.D. Melanie teaches patients to adopt a balanced and realistic approach to healthy eating and regular physical activity. She currently provides individual nutrition counseling for a variety of health conditions within Village Health Partners and teaches group classes related to health, wellness and weight management.

Kidney Disease Prevention Tips

In honor of Kidney Awareness Month, Village Health Partners is educating our patients about the causes of Chronic Kidney Disease and sharing kidney super foods to help prevent kidney-related health issues! Chronic kidney disease damages kidneys and decreases their ability to maintain overall health. Healthy kidneys cleanse the blood by removing waste and excess fluid, all while maintaining the balance of salt and minerals. Kidneys also help regulate blood pressure.

Healthy kidneys handle numerous detailed roles:

  • Retain a healthy balance of water, sodium, potassium and phosphorus in your blood stream.
  • Eliminate waste from the blood after digestion, muscle activity and exposure to medications.
  • Create renin, an enzyme that helps regulate blood pressure.
  • Create erythropoietin, an enzyme that fuels red blood cell production.
  • Provide an active form of vitamin D, required for bone health.

The two main causes of chronic kidney disease are diabetes and high blood pressure, which makes up to two-thirds of all cases. With damaged kidneys, waste can reach high levels in the blood and can cause complications like high blood pressure, low blood count, brittle bones, poor nutritional health and possible nerve damage. If kidney disease becomes more aggressive, it can eventually lead to kidney failure. Patients with kidney disease may require dialysis or even a kidney transplant.

Super kidney foods can help produce energy and neutralize free radicals that damage your proteins, genes and cell membrane. Including the following fruits and vegetables in your diet can help your kidneys stay healthy:

  • Red bell peppers give generous portion of vitamins A, C, B6, folic acid and fiber.
  • Cabbage is filled with Phytochemicals to break down free radicals.
  • Cauliflower contains compounds to help your liver neutralize toxic substances.
  • Garlic reduces inflammation and lowers cholesterol. Garlic also has antioxidant and anti-clotting assets.
  • Onion contains Flavonoids that prevent the deposit of fatty material in blood vessels.
  • Apples are high in fiber and anti-inflammatory properties. Apples can also help reduce cholesterol.
  • Cranberries help prevent urinary tract infections.
  • Blueberries reduce inflammation and contribute to healthy bones.
  • Raspberries consist of ellagic acid, which helps neutralize free radicals.
  • Strawberries are rich in two types of antioxidants, plus strawberries contain lots of vitamin C, manganese and fiber.
  • Cherries help reduce inflammation.
  • Red grapes prevent oxidation and reduce the chance of blood clots.
  • Egg whites provide the highest quality of protein, along with all of the essential amino acids.
  • Fish is a great source of protein. Fish contains anti-inflammatory fats called omega-3s, which also help prevent diseases.
  • Olive Oil is filled with oleic acid, which protects against oxidation and polyphenols.

Village Health Partners can assist you with early detection testing and healthy living measures to maintain healthy kidneys. Please schedule an appointment to learn more about your kidney health or receive kidney health preventative testing.

Women’s Heart Health Prevention Tips & Symptoms

A healthy heart is vital for every woman’s overall health. Heart disease is not just a health concern for men – it is the leading cause of death for American women. Women’s hearts are different from men’s, as women tend to have smaller hearts and smaller arteries than men, and the symptoms of heart disease also differ. For women, the signs of heart trouble can be much more subtle. The best heart health prevention is to know the signs and symptoms, as well as follow a healthy lifestyle as indicated by the heart health tips below.

Six common heart attack symptoms among women include:

  1. Chest pain or discomfort: This is the most common heart attack symptom and may feel like a squeezing or fullness.
  2. Pain in your arm(s), back, neck or jaw: This pain can be gradual or sudden.
  3. Stomach pain: Many women report experiencing severe abdominal pressure.
  4. Shortness 0f breath, nausea or lightheadedness: Having trouble breathing for no apparent reason can actually be a sign of a heart attack.
  5. Sweating: Breaking out in a nervous, cold sweat is common among women during a heart attack.
  6. Fatigue: Feeling extremely tired sitting or standing without prior strenuous activity may also be a sign of a heart health issue.

Please take the following precautions to prevent heart health problems among women:

  • Schedule an appointment with your Plano doctor at Village Health Partners to prevent heart related issues and address health concerns early on.
  • Quit smoking. Quitting smoking can cut the risk of coronary heart disease by 50%!
  • Continue to exercise. Just walking 30 minutes a day can lower your risk for heart attack and stroke.
  • Add heart healthy foods to your daily diet such as yogurt, almonds, walnuts, blueberries, cranberries, oranges, raspberries and salmon.

Heart Healthy Treats for Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is not the only main event in February, it is also Heart Disease Awareness month! Heart Disease is one of the leading causes of death for both men and women, and you can help prevent cardiovascular disease among your loved ones.

Around Valentine’s Day, we are surrounded by high-calorie snacks and sweet desserts for the festive day. Instead of making a high-calorie dessert for your Valentine’s themed work luncheon or your special little Valentine’s class party at school, create a fun, healthy snack using fruits and veggies. Below are heart healthy ideas for some Valentine’s Day desserts:

  • Create a Yogurt Parfait with Greek yogurt and your choice of heart healthy fruits & veggies (almonds, walnuts, blueberries, cranberries, oranges, raspberries). Use strawberry or raspberry flavored yogurt to match the holiday’s signature pink & red colors!
  • Toast Valentine’s Day with a glass of red wine. Red wine improves HDL cholesterol.
  • Treat yourself to some dark chocolate to help lower your blood pressure (choose 70% or higher cocoa content). Make dark chocolate brownies, pudding, covered strawberries, covered fruit kabobs or a fondue dip to go with your other favorite items.
  • Cut cheese and sandwiches with a heart-shaped cookie cutter.

Happy Valentine’s Day from your Plano doctors!

VHP Partnership Launches Patient Care Program

Village Health Partners is proud to announce an exciting new program for our patients! By partnering with the healthcare company Cigna, we will be able to provide our patients a higher quality of healthcare than ever before. The accountable care program will assist patients with reduced medical costs. The program also helps our Plano doctors educate patients about preventive care to improve their overall health. Through the new program, 85% of Village Health Partners’ patients will covered through medial home agreements.

Our accountable care program will help our Plano doctors organize all areas of patient care, ensuring each patient receives the personal attention and ongoing healthcare they deserve. The program searches for patients that are overdue on health check-ups, schedules appointments and refers patients to disease and lifestyle management programs.

Existing patients at Village Health Partners will automatically receive the benefits of the care program. Patients that will especially benefit from this program are those seeking assistance with chronic conditions.

Dr. Crow was interviewed by numerous Dallas news publications about his role in launching the accountable care program at Village Health Partners.
